Description

A George II gold- mounted hardstone travelling writing casket of rectangular form. The whole set with panels of opaque grey agate, within cage work mounts repousse and chased with scrolls and flowers. The centre of the lid with a repousse gold plaque of a putto writing a letter, the lock-plate and hinges chased with birds and flowers and the gilt interior fitted with two cut glass bottles with gold domed covers, one for ink, the other for sand. Also three compartments, two fitted with ivory writing tablets, the red velvet linings bordered with gold braid.
