Born in February 1864 in Paris, René Boivin began his career in Jewellery making and was additionally known as an excellent designer and engraver. He established several workshops in the 1890’s on rue St. Anastase. In 1893, he married Jeanne Poiret, sister of the famous couturier Jean Poiret. This match was advantageous for Boivin’s career as by working together, they were able to create come of the boldest and most daring fashions of the early 1900s. Jeanne assumed control of her husband’s firm, upon his death in 1917, moving the firm to the avenue de L’Opéra with the help of her daughter Germaine Boivin and the designer Juliette Moutard. This was a most harmonious partnership as the three continued to work together for the next forty years. Their jewels, inspired by the natural world, animals, flora and fauna, became extremely well-known.
