John Gamon

Son of Micheal Gamon late Citisen and Haberdasher of London deceased, apprenticed to William Fawdery 22 January 1717 on payment of £20. Free, 16 April 1724. Mark entered as largeworker, 22 March 1727. Address: Gutter Lane. Second mark, 15 June 1739. Address: Staining Lane. Two sons of William and Dinah Gamon appear in the register of St. Vedast: William, born 26 May 1728 and John, born 17 February 1730. The latter was apprenticed to John Ruffin of the Goldsmiths' Company, 4 June 1746, when his father is described as 'late', and had presumably died before the entry of Dinah Gamon's mark in March 1740. Evans lists John Gamon, Senior and Junior, and Micheal as Huguenots. The latter two, if indeed goldsmiths, have no registered marks and the evidence of their French ancestry seems based on the name. Michael Gamon, goldworker, 3 Paul's Court, Hogan Lane, appears in the Parl. Report list, 1773, and he may well have been another son of John, named after his grandfather.
