An Incredibly Rare Parcel-Gilt Novelty Four-Piece Victorian Tea Service

London, 1867
Maker’s Mark of Edward Charles Brown

96oz 10dwt

An exceptional four-piece, silver Victorian tea set, comprising a teapot with original detachable stand and oil burner, a second tea pot, milk jug and sugar bowl, all authentically modelled as kettle drums with applied silver-gilt rope-effect mouldings.

Each piece of this tea set is mounted on three silver-gilt lion mask and paw legs with the spouts of the teapot and milk jug formed as roaring lion heads and the handles fashioned into coiled belts and buckles. The lids with drumstick finials also silver-gilt.

The Coat of Arms bears the inscription – Nemo me impune lacessit - meaning ‘No one provokes me with impunity’ used as the National Motto of the Kingdom of Scotland.

The Coat of Arms like that of Sir Archibald Kennedy, Marquess of Ailsa: Argent, a chevron gules between three cross crosslets fitchée sable, all within a double tressure flory and counter-flory of the second. Mantling gules, doubled ermine. Supporters: two swans proper, beaked, and membered gules. Motto: "Avise la fin."
