The pair of vases and cover modelled in a style which was significantly influenced by the classical Greek one, which was very profoundly appreciated during the Empire period and after in France.
In 1807, Thomas Hope, who was a celebrated designer and collector during the Regency period in England and who had a few Lebrun pieces engraved with his arms, published an illustrated account of the house and its furnishings entitled Household Furniture and Interior Decoration. This publication considerably influenced other architects and designers working in the Greek Revival style.
The maker, Marc-Augustin Lebrun, was trained under the renowned silversmith Jean-Baptiste-Claude Odiot and is known for his great pieces of silver in the classical style. King Charles X gave a hot water urn with similar swan decoration and hallmarks Lebrun to an aristocrat in 1827, and is now in the Louvre, Paris.
