An Extremely Rare Charles II Inkwell

The stand of plain rectangular form on four claw feet. The hinged lid with an ogee engraved with a coat of arms with ribboned quilled mantling. The interior decorated with four compartments, two for ink and sand with white glass liners. Hallmarks on the lid rim and base: town, title, date letter (N) and master silversmith

The arms are those of Walrond, with the quarter Mompesson, for Sir William Walrond (1630-1689) of Bradfield, in the County of Devon, and his wife Dinah, daughter and co-heiress of Sir Thomas Mompesson.
