The scalloped cover with conforming gold hinge mount with engraved ribband and foliate decoration, the base carved as an acanthus leaf.
Accompanied by a handwritten note: For my dear brother Gerald Addington at my death. It was given by Dean Pellew to our father & had previously belonged to the 1st Lord Exmouth. Supposed to be foreign - Italian. Signed Alice Mary Bevan.
Alice Mary Bevan: Hon. Alice Mary Addington (1849-1929), m. 6 March 1894, James Johnstone Bevan (d. 1898) of Northgate House, Bury St Edmunds (Suffolk); daughter of Addington, William Wells (1824-1913), 3rd Viscount Sidmouth and Georgiana Susan (d. 1896), eldest daughter of Very. Rev. & Hon. George Pellew, third son of 1st Viscount Exmouth, Dean of Norwich.
