William Chawner II

He was the son of Jonathan Chawner of Horncastle in the County of Lincoln who was a tanner. Chawner was apprenticed to William Fearn of Clerkenwell Green on the 4th January 1797. He became a freeman 4th April 1804. His first hallmark was entered 10th April 1808 in partnership with William Eley and William Fear who were spoon makers based at 1 Lovell’s Court, Paternoster Row. This partnership apparently terminated 6th October 1814 when Eley and Fearn entered a new hallmark together. Chawner’s first hallmark alone is recorded as a spoon maker, 9th February 1815. His address is recorded at 16 Hosier Lane, West Smithfield. Again, he is described as a spoon maker in the apprenticeship to him of James Dovey, 1816. Second mark, 13th August 1819. Third mark, 27th January 1820. Fourth, 14th February 1820. Fifth, 11th August 1821. Sixth (two sizes), 11 June 1825. Seventh, 14 October 1833. Chawner was made a Liveryman, 20th January 1824. He married, 16th June 1816 at St. Bartholomew the Great, Mary Burwash, presumably sister of William Burwash. His son William, born 31st March 1817, was apprenticed to him 1831, free 1838. A daughter, Mary Ann was also born 26th April 1818. Chawner died 20th March 1834.
