Director's Choice - Adrien-Jean-Maximilien Vachette
In this week’s Director’s Choice, I wanted to highlight one of greatest of the Parisian goldsmiths of the 18th and 19th century. His work is incredibly varied and always jewel like in its quality and execution. We are fortunate enough to have two of his outstanding boxes which will be showing at the forthcoming LAPADA Fair next week in Berkeley Square.
The first of these, illustrated above, has the most exquisite lapis lazuli panels mounted in gold borders of flowing foliate tendrils interspersed with quatrefoil flowers. The Corinthian pillars to the sides of the box help frame the lapis which is perfectly partitioned by gold wire and held in place with a dart decorated border.
