Directors Choice – The Fane Tureen
An Important George II Soup Tureen
London 1737
Maker’s mark of George Wickes
Length: 42 cm (18 ½ inches); Weight: 4,035 g (129.7 oz)
Bearing the coat-of-arms of Fane for Henry Fane of Wormsley, Watlington, Oxon., MP for Lyme Regis (1757-1777)
Where sculpture meets function in seamless fusion one finds the greatest creations of the 18th century. This George Wickes masterpiece commissioned by Henry Fane of Wormsley, is a joy resting on its four lion-mask, claw and ball capped feet, Its handles cast as the crest of Fane (a bull's head) and the body applied with cast armorials of Fane and Rowe within rococo cartouches. The stepped and domed lid with cast and applied crests of Fane in rococo cartouches and classical Roman Emperor’s busts within rococo shell and foliate decoration all on textured backgrounds. The cast scroll-handle with highly stylised lion mask, paw and leaf decoration.
