Of round shape with blue enamelling and gold partitions with multicoloured floral enamels on the side and border. To the lid a medallion depicting a classical shepherdess with a putto set within an idyllic landscape.
Born in Paris 1760, Jean-Baptiste-François Cheret became a master silversmith in 1759 at the age of thirty-one. Later, he assumed the position as tax inspector, testing pieces of silver to ensure that the standard of metal was adhered to and they contained the correct quantities, he soon after rose to become chief inspector. He died at the age of seventy-two, 25th August 1832. Many of his pieces now reside in important museum collections across the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
