Bearing the family crest of a stag
The Candlesticks have circular bases decorated with reeding and a wide band of flat fluting which rises to a band of acanthus spears. The octagonal stems are also decorated with acanthus spears and reeding, as are the elegant tulip shaped capitals. The pull off nozzles and bases are fully marked, and the candlesticks are in most excellent condition.
William Laver was apprentice to his father Benjamin, who had himself been apprentice to the great Thomas Heming. The work of Benjamin Laver is strongly influenced by the Classicism of Heming and you can see this in the work of his son, William. He had workshops in Bridle Lane, Golden Square, when these pieces were made.
